MADNESS IN A REGGAE TOWN
About
“Madness in a Reggae Town” brings together Indigenous storytelling, reggae rhythm, and blues in a song about urban survival, identity, political disillusionment, and finding love in a dangerous world.
This remix revisits an older composition, combining my original vocal and guitar with renewed instrumental backing. At its heart is a “poor man’s philosophy”—the struggle to hold onto dignity, speak honest words, and keep creating through difficult times.
Images of a pawned guitar and “words in a pawn shop” reflect what survival can cost an artist. The song also confronts racism, quoting a hateful statement within its narrative to expose the cruelty being challenged. Through these darker passages, it continues searching for belonging, spiritual meaning, recovery, and hope.
A little performance aside: the gravelly voice at the beginning, around the cigarette and “soothes my soul” passage, is my playful Tom Waits impression. I’ve long enjoyed his music; the opening is a characterful introduction before the song continues in my own singing voice.
Written and performed by Donald Morin.
