Donald Morin - Evil Waits in the Corners (2026 Re-version) | MMIWG Tribute & Memorial
“Won’t you go for a ride?”
This is a 2026 re-imagining of the original song "Evil Waits in the Corners," a poignant multimedia tribute to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) of Vancouver, British Columbia, and across the country.
The History: A Bridge Between Worlds
The foundation of this song was laid in July 2016. I wrote the lyrics and music during a significant stay at the Ilikai Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was born from a need to speak to the darkness where "evil waits in the corner" and to honor those lost to that darkness.
Ten years later, I returned to the 25th floor of the Ilikai Hotel to record this high-definition reimagined version. Using Suno AI to add atmospheric depth, I have layered the original 2016 audio beneath this new performance. Because both versions share the same key, they create a haunting "spiritual echo." This resonance represents the thin veil between the physical world and the spirit world—a reminder that those we have lost remain with us.
The Memorial & The Spirit Guide
This performance is deeply connected to the story of James, the spirit guide in my film. The background audio—the voices of children and the atmosphere of community—comes from James’ actual memorial. In Aboriginal culture, the presence of children at a memorial is a sacred sign of life’s continuity.
As the song concludes, Ray Thunderchild (son of Victor Thunderchild) shares the story of James, documenting the journey of how our people pass into the spirit world and the portals we navigate to stay connected to them.
LYRICS
(Original Music and Lyrics by Donald Morin, July 2016)
(Verse 1)
One of those missing women
Missing women
I miss her
Missing women
(Verse 2)
So come all you people say
For those missing women
All along the side of the road
And the dust and trash
(Verse 3)
All along the streets and alleys
Alleys of the city
Where all those missing women
Tragedy for their families
(Refrain)
Oh Mary, Mary, Mary
Oh Sweet Virgin Mary
Won't you say hello to those missing women
Won't you give some tobacco and salmon too
To the missing women
(Verse 4)
Oh and say sailor's prayer
Someday I'll have another inquiry
Let the police take the stand
And the mayor's wanting a big share in what to say
(Verse 5)
And what about those missing women's families
Born of residential schools
Born of the Indian Act too
And now they are on their own
At that missing women inquiry
(Verse 6)
And the sun was shining on her face
She looks at her little ones
And they look at her
So she steps outside
(Verse 7)
Where evil waits in the corner
Where evil waits in the corner
Won't you go for a ride
(Verse 8)
All she wanted to do was live and breathe
All she wanted to do was breathe and live
For the next day with the Great Creator
And her missing family
(Final Chorus)
Someday I'll have a big ceremony
And what about those missing women's family
All across the city
All across the country
At the missing women inquiry.
