Headline: Walking Softly: A Tribute to Eric Gray
I was hit with some very heavy news last night. I just learned that my old friend and collaborator, Eric Gray, passed away this past April.
Eric was a true multi-disciplinary artist—a carver, a producer, and a gifted videographer and sound engineer. The video I’m sharing today is an excerpt from work we did in 2012 in Treaty 6 territory. It serves as a testament to his skill both behind the lens and at the soundboard.
Eric’s presence is woven deeply into my work; you can hear and see his influence in both of my creative streams online. He was a vital part of " Monsieur Cote" and the experimental film "7 Fires 4 U... Kitchi Manitou," for which he captured powerful images in Seattle and the Downtown Eastside (DTES). THis stream contains excerpts showing his work.
What makes this even harder to process is that Eric and I had been talking as recently as this spring. We were catching up over Facebook video, discussing my latest film project and making plans for him to come on board. I was so looking forward to having his eye and his expertise on set again. Sadly, he has moved on to the spirit world, and that collaboration wasn't meant to be in this lifetime. Such is life, I suppose—fragile and unpredictable.
Eric and I go all the way back to 1989. We lived through the intensity of the Oka era together, shared a home on Pandora Street in Vancouver, did community radio, and worked together down in Seattle. He was a constant part of my most formative memories from the 90s and early 2000s. He was a man of creativity, laughter, and deep commitment to our people.
Thank you, Eric, for the years of friendship and the incredible work you left behind. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family, his friends, and the community.
Walk softly, my old friend. Your journey continues.
