UVAGUT (THIS IS US) (English)

The UVAGUT (This is Us) video brings together representations of deaf Nunavummiut from across different communities, demonstrating how shared Inuit Societal Values and customs are expressed in Inuit Sign Language (ISL). Arranged thematically, video footage connects the practices of deaf youth and elders, illustrating commonalities across communities with regard to deaf social inclusion. Narrated by a native user of ISL, Philip Ugjuk, the Uvagut video provides insight into the lives and social experiences of Deaf Nunavummiut.

Monica is a respected elder from the community of Rankin Inlet.She and her late husband Thomas have thirteen children, five ofwhom are deaf. Monica’s life story provides insight into customary experiences of living on the land in the region of Garry Lake.
