Title: Put on the armor of God and John Stuart | As A Koden: Talking Story
Description:
"Grab your armor for the light of the world."
This video is part of my film project, "Talking Story: Who Is Your Name?". In the Hawaiian tradition of As A Koden, it is a memorial gift for Connie, Jimy Sidlar, and Debra Charlie.
The Irony of the Moment:
The video presents a stark and heavy irony. We hear John Stewart and others "talking story" about God, the Gospel, and the spiritual path. Meanwhile, the visuals capture a "spirit moment" where the system is breaking the law—specifically the moment the system breaks into Willie’s apartment.
This is the "thickening" of life that the film explores: everyone is reflecting on their lives, their ancestors, and the "pandemic blues," while the world outside goes wild and the system fails to follow its own rules.
Song 1: Grab Your Armor for the Light of the World
[Chorus]
Grab your armor for the light of the world
Oh Father, Mother
Grab your armor for the light of the world
Oh Father, oh Father in heaven
Come on down and join the party
[Verse 1]
The world's gone wild
The world's gone wild
Pandemic, pandemic blues... blue, blue
Just an empty page to look at
Looking for your ancestors in the future that day
[Verse 2]
And the pageant’s going wild
Evil’s coming to town
As we wait for the sun
During the fall of man
A world in terror all behind me
A world in terror all around me
[Bridge]
Searching for the word
Searching for the word
But whose word?
Fodder for the crows
As the children play
Mask on, mask off
What are you going to do that day?
Song 2 Excerpt
Dying for the Blues
(Dedicated to Connie)
[Verse 1]
Oh, we’re all dying for the blue
Yeah, we’re all dying for the blue
So come on all you people
Say thank you, thank you Great Creator
For teaching us the blue
You live the blue
[Verse 2]
A friend joined you today
She was a sunshine in my day
Connie, now you passed away
And we were shaking that day
A spirit song kind of day
[Verse 3]
Your light shone right up the room
Old natives sat around
Dark words of the 60s time
Oh, we were wearing those dark glasses
In a dark kind of mood
A 60s kind of mood
A 60s kind of mood
[Outro]
Thank you, thank you, thank you Great Creator
For the words you gave to her
She painted that town
She painted that town
Dark words from a light and angel
As we were looking for our soul
Connie, we were looking for our soul...
